Disregarding other People's Opinions of Us

Others perceptions of us are normal - whatever thay are. Furthermore, their perceptions and opinions of us are none of our business. We need to do whatever it takes to cast off the shackles of caring what other people think of us. [Easier said than done I know.]

For many of us that may mean we have to deal with and address our low self-esteem from childhood. For others, it may mean releasing any guilt we have. And for others, it may mean true acceptance of who we are. [Including our perceived shortcomings.]

I look at it like this: When I care what other people think of me, it is because I don't think so highly of me - for whatever reason - and I need *you* to do it for me. Then, I mistakenly feel that if enough people can *like* me, I'll finally *arrive* at my self-love, good self-esteem, good self-acceptance, eradication of guilt, and so forth.

It does not happen, though, this way. As long as my self-worth is contingent upon another person's view of me, I will forever be at the whim of others' opinions, and so busy trying to be *liked* that I have no opportunity to even discover, "Who am I?"

Not everyone is going to like you all the time. Get that through your head already. Now say aloud, "So what?" Go ahead and play it through? "What's the worst that can happen?"

Often being so scared that someone would not like me, I never played it through and THAT was the fear. [Fear of the unknown.]

Now if someone has the bad manners to express they don't like you and then continue on to try to tell you why, you can always say, "Thanks. But your opinion of me is really not my business." Then walk away. [For those of you who have played it through and realize you fear words. :) ]

You want to know freedom? Work on not caring and not being shackled to others' perceptions of you. But this does mean YOU getting okay with YOU. [Small price to pay for freedom in my opinion.]

If you like me, that's swell elegant.
If you don't like me, I don't care.

Fortunately, no person on this earth is my higher power today. [Is this true for you right now?]
My higher power resides inside and THAT's the one I try to please. As long as that's the one we seek to please, no one else's opinion will ever matter.

And we will be free.
