Victim Buys his Mugger Dinner
Julio Diaz Buys his Mugger Dinner after Offering his Jacket Social Worker Julio Diaz, 31, was doing what he did every night. He had caught the subway into the Bronx to dine at one of his regular diners. But as NPR describes this particular night in the otherwise ordinary evening of this 31 year old social worker... But one night last month, as Diaz stepped off the No. 6 train and onto a nearly empty platform, his evening took an unexpected turn. And as recounted in the article, Victim Treats his Mugger to Dinner, this night would be very different. He was walking toward the stairs when a teenage boy approached and pulled out a knife. "He wants my money, so I just gave him my wallet and told him, 'Here you go,'" Diaz says. As the teen began to walk away, Diaz told him, "Hey, wait a minute. You forgot something. If you're going to be robbing people for the rest of the night, you might as well take my coat to keep you warm." Julio Diaz's Compassion did not stop there After more conversation that I would love to have witnessed they both go to the diner! (The blanks can be filled in by going to NPR and reading or listening to A Victim Treats his Mugger Right) After dinner and conversation, Julio says he *would* have treated but that the mugger had his wallet and so would he return it? The mugger returned it and Julio treated for dinner. Then, Julio offered him $20 to help the teenager but did ask for the knife in return. The teen gave it to him. Can you Believe it? When our co-workers or relatives or even complete strangers begin to grate on me, I am going to remember Julio Diaz. I am going to remember his bravery and selflessness. I am going to remember that true compassion and kindness emanates from within. If this man can pay it forward to a man who had him at knife-point and demanded his wallet, I am sure I can manage it with the person who inadvertently or hurriedly tailgates me.

Thank you for sharing. I guess that as a social worker with a passion for his work, Mr Diaz sees muggers not as evil lowlifes but as individuals. If anyone who lacks that understanding and empathy were to try and do what Mr Diaz did, they'd get knifed in an instant, because they'd come across as annoying condescending posers. So don't try this at home, unless you know what you're doing.
